Community & Green Initiatives
One of the tenants of the Montessori philosophy is to be a “good steward of the earth”. Involving our students in recycling and composting is just one of the most basic ways we begin to impart those values. It’s never too early to teach children about compassion and helping those that are less fortunate. We have several annual projects that serve our surrounding community. We encourage all families that are able participate in the projects, and teach your children that every person can make a difference. Our Community Recycling Bin is the big yellow and green bin located in the far corner of our parking lot. We collect the following there:
- Junk Mail
- Books without covers
- Shredded Paper
We also collect these other items at our recycling station in the main hallway (with the colored bins)
- Alumnium can tabs for the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware
- Bottle Caps for recapcompany.com
- Eyeglasses for the Lion’s Club
- Used Capri Sun Pouches & Elmer’s Glue Sticks for terracycle.net
We compost in our classrooms and have a very large area on our nature trail to dump and cultivate the compost. If your family composts or wants to start, and needs a place to bring it, we are happy to share our space!
No Cost Fundraising
Target Take Charge of Education – Our School ID # is 21116 If you shop using your RedCard at Target be sure to designate Children’s House as your rewards recipient for ALL purchases. The school receives a percentage of your purchase back in cash rewards.
We get the students involved in doing collections or raising money for charities through fun things like “wear your pajamas to school day” or a “special snack day” but we also really impart the importance of helping others through kind acts, including donations.
